Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is one of the temples with stunning views in Bali. With limestone architecture that is slightly different from other temples in Bali, Uluwatu temple is one of the public temples in Bali. This place is the best place to see the sunset in Bali and at the same time we can see the colossal dance of Kecak and Fire Dance. This place is also inhabited by many cute and adorable monkeys. At sunset time you will be able to see spectacular views when the sun touches the horizon.

Explanation 

Uluwatu Temple is one of the most important temples in Bali, located 25 kilometers south of the city of Denpasar. This temple is located on a rocky hill that juts into the sea, about 800 m above sea level, and surrounded by forests inhabited by monkeys. The meaning of the name Uluwatu is Ulu means head and Watu means stone, so the meaning of the name Uluwatu is a temple built on the edge of the rock. The temple was built in the 11th century by a priest named Mpu Kuturan and then refined back in the 16th century by Dang Hyang Nirartha a Hindu priest who came from Java. The design of this temple gate is slightly different with the gate design in general in Bali, it is winged gate like gate style in Java. And most of the stone used to build this temple is white limestone. When we enter this temple area, we can see many monkeys hanging around. The type of monkey here is a gray-colored monkey with a long tail (macaque). You are advised to be careful with valuables and jewelry and glasses when entering this temple area, because the monkeys are a bit naughty and sometimes take guest’s goods. You should put your valuables in the car before entering this temple. From this temple we can enjoy the spectacular view of the Indian Ocean with great waves. We can walk around from the north end to the south end to enjoy the scenery and monkeys. In the afternoon this place is one of the best places to see the sunset. And every day at 6 o’clock in the afternoon, Kecak and Fire Dance show is held here. You can watch this dance while enjoying the sunset.

Kecak and Fire Dance

Kecak dance is a colossal dance that tells the story of the Ramayana. In this dance we can see the great King Rama, which is assisted by the monkey forces to seize his wife Queen Shinta who was kidnapped by King Rahwana who is very arrogant and cruel. This dance is unique, because it doesn’t involve instruments. To accompany the dancers, a group of people will shout cak..cak .. cak loudly with different intonations that give a unique rhythm. Because the stage is located on a high cliff near Uluwatu Temple, so you can also see a very beautiful sunset while enjoying this dance. 

Explanation 

This dance was created in 1930 by artist Wayan Limbak from Bedulu Village in Gianyar Regency in collaboration with European artist Walter Spies. This dance involves many men around 20 to 50 people. They will sit in a big circle, and within the circle some dancers will dance there. These guys will shout cak… cak… cak continuously with beautiful intonation. So, there is no music accompanying this dance, just the shouts from the sitting men. This dance tells the story of Ramayana, there is a king named Rama has a very beautiful wife named Shinta. Queen Shinta is kidnapped by an evil king named Rahwana, and to save Shinta, Rama with the help of the monkey troops fight against Rahwana. The monkey troops are led by a white monkey named Hanoman. The story of this dance tells the loyalty of a pair of lovers through the ordeal of life. At the end of the story, there is a man riding a horse costume walking on a big fire, but because in a trance state, nothing bad happens to this man.
